Illinois Tech Baseball’s Ted Howell Named Academic All-America

Illinois Tech has its first Google Cloud Academic All-America selection in the NCAA Division III era.

Ted Howell, a third-year infielder on the Scarlet Hawks baseball team, was named second-team academic All-America on Tuesday, June 4, nearly a month after being named academic all-district. The academic All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

As Illinois Tech’s primary first baseman, Howell put together an outstanding 2019 campaign. The Colorado native led the team with eight home runs, while also driving in 28 runs. He sported a .295 batting average, .364 on-base percentage, and .600 slugging percentage.

In the classroom, Howell earned a perfect grade-point average of 4.0 while pursuing degrees in mechanical and aerospace engineering. He also serves as a lab assistant, and has held a leadership position in the Delta Tau Delta fraternity every semester. In addition, Howell has worked on projects including a portable nebulizer for delivering asthma medication, in addition to designing a product that chills a room-temperature beverage to ice cold in 30 seconds.

Howell is one of just 33 NCAA Division III baseball student-athletes to receive the academic All-America honor.
